The Sameness Problem

A guest scrolling a booking platform at 9pm sees forty properties in the same valley, in the same wide-angle light, staged the same way. White linens. An empty living room shot from the corner. An aerial exterior that never once caught someone standing in the yard. After the fifteenth listing they stop looking at properties and start looking at price, star rating, and distance to town.

At that point the sort order is doing the choosing. The platform sells the reassurance that any listing in this filter will do, and it sells it well.

Where The Story Actually Lives

Everything that would break that tie disappears from standard listing photos:

Coffee poured on the porch at first light, mist still sitting over the valley, caught on video

The wood stove lit before the guest opens the door, a moment that only reads as real in motion

A private hot tub steaming against the snow at night, filmed long enough that you can hear it

The exact view from the window seat, panned slowly enough that it feels like standing there

A firepit or lobby with guests actually laughing in it

Listing photography was built to make comparison easy. Memorability was never its job. Every owner gets handed the same handful of static angles, and every guest gets handed the same forty nearly identical results. The problem runs from a single cabin to a full-service hotel, and the fix is the same at both ends.

Why Guests Actually Choose The Platform

Here is the part most direct-booking advice gets wrong. The guest at checkout never sees the commission and never thinks about it. That fee is the operator's cost, invisible on their side of the screen. What actually pulls guests to the platform is concrete: loyalty points they have been banking all year, one app that holds every trip, easy side-by-side comparison, the feeling of discount shopping, and sometimes a channel rate that quietly undercuts the property's own website.

So “book direct and save us the fee” persuades nobody. Two things do. First, proof that this specific property is worth choosing, which is exactly what the standard listing strips out. A short video of the hot tub steaming in the snow makes a property non-interchangeable. A staged aerial shot keeps it in the pile. Second, a direct offer that beats the platform on its own terms: rate parity or better, a perk the platform cannot list, and a booking path that feels as easy as the app. If your own channel rates undercut your website, no amount of video will out-argue a cheaper price sitting two tabs over. Fix that first.

The Commercial Payoff

When Charming Inns of Alberta shifted toward guest-experience-led visual content and intentional short-form video in Q1, social traffic increased 59%. The moment a guest can watch a specific evening in a specific place, sameness stops deciding.

The payoff compounds. Every booking that moves to the direct channel keeps the commission that would otherwise be paid twice in a season. A guest who remembers your property by name, and can picture the exact window seat, is the guest who books again next winter without opening the app. A direct site built around real video of real evenings gives you somewhere to send that returning guest. No algorithm required.

Closing The Gap

Most properties in this valley already have the goods. The hot tub, the view, the fireplace, the lounge worth sitting in. What is missing is visual proof, in photo and in motion, that any of it feels like something.

This will not fix a rate priced wrong for the season, and it will not rescue a booking engine or a turnover process that runs guests into each other at check-in. Those are separate jobs, worth doing.

A Guest Experience Visibility Review is a practical place to start. It looks at what your property already delivers, finds where that disappears the moment a guest starts comparing listings, and lays out photography and video recommendations built around your property, your season, and the guests you would rather not share a commission on.
